Wild Stories from the History of Bird Migration Research

Rebecca Heisman, author of Flight Paths, will join us via Zoom to present an interesting and informative program for our community!

We've all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances that birds travel, the ways that they navigate, etc. But did you ever wonder how we figured all of this out? While working for the American Ornithological Society, Rebecca Heisman became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that scientists have used to study bird migration, and this eventually became the basis for her book Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration. In her talk, she'll share some surprising stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.

Bio: Rebecca Heisman is an award-winning science writer who lives in Walla Walla, Washington, and has worked with organizations including the Audubon Society, the American Bird Conservancy, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the American Ornithological Society. Flight Paths is her first book.

This program is open to the general public who may attend as guests of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club.

Tuesday Evening At Reeds Lake

Led By: Steve Minard

This trip is an evening walk to the Hodenpyl Woods area at the west end of Reeds Lake. Varied woodland, marsh, and lake habitat provides a variety of birds right in town. On this trip, we will concentrate on waterbirds, and early warblers. The boardwalk provides good views of the lake and marsh areas so we will visit it. Note that we are starting a week earlier this year. Birds do seem to be migrating earlier and we hope to avoid congestion at the ballfield. Birders of all skills are welcome.

Essentials: Meet at the East Grand Rapids Utility Building parking lot on Reeds Lake Blvd north of Gaslight Village at 6:00 PM. Waterproof footwear and insect repellent may be useful. Poison Ivy is thick in places.

Safety Hazards: Drive safely to meet the group. Watch for traffic when crossing the road and bicycles on the pathway.

Bird on the Move: Looking to the Past to Secure the Future of the Kirtland’s Warbler

We will close out the 2023/2024 season with our GRAC Annual May Meeting with a special presentation focused on Kirtland's Warblers. Our presenter is Steve Roels - Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director for American Bird Conservancy.

The removal of the Kirtland’s Warbler from the federal endangered species list is a victory for the bird and its champions. Yet threats to the species’ future, including climate change and human development, persist. Examining the deep history of Kirtland’s Warbler and its instinctive behaviors offers hope that the bird, despite its fussy reputation, can adapt to a changing planet. Unprecedented research projects are revealing how the warbler’s movement ecology has enabled its survival across millennia and what we must do support the warbler as it navigates the new millennium.

This event is open to the general public who may attend as guests of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club.

Accessible Birding at Anderson Woods Nature Preserve

Led By: Alex Field & Spencer High

Join the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, Disability Network West Michigan, and the Grand Rapids Audubon Club for a birding event at Anderson Woods Nature Preserve. The Grand Rapids Audubon Club will lead us as we hike the accessible trail, learn the basics of birding, and put our skills to the test.

Located near the lakeshore, Anderson Woods provides important nesting and feeding habitat for migratory birds and supports resident birds that require large tracts of unbroken forest. To assist in the identification and tracking of any birds spotted on the trail, we recommend downloading the Merlin Bird ID app. We will have some binoculars available to borrow, but please bring your own if you have them!

We will cover 1 mile of trail during this event, the max grade of which is 2%. The trailhead parking lot is reserved for accessible parking, additional parking will be available alongside Simonelli Road.

This event will happen outside. In the case of severe or dangerous weather, the event may be postponed or cancelled. Registrants will be notified of any changes via email.

This event is free for members and the public - however, space is limited, so please register to attend at naturenearby.org/events!

Summer Marsh Field Trip

Led By: Steve Minard

This is planned as a summer trip to the marsh at Lane’s Landing in the Muskegon State Game Area. Nesting birds have settled in and many of them should be attending to their young. It is one of the better times of year to see Least Bitterns in flight. They are present in this marsh and if you are watching carefully, and you are lucky, you may see one make a brief flight from on spot to another in the marsh. Rails, ducks and cranes are also possible. Depending on time, we may visit other nearby birding areas.

Essentials: Meet at the Boy Scout Headquarters west off Walker Road just north of I-96 at 8:00AM. We plan to bird until noon, you may want to bring a snack to hold you over until lunch.

Safety Hazards: Driving in a caravan can be hazardous. Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop. Annual Bluebird Nest Clean-out Day at Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center

Annual Bluebird Nest Clean-out Day at Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center

Led By: Steve Minard

For many years, Grand Rapids Audubon Club members have helped to erect and maintain hundreds of nest boxes on the Resource Recovery Center property.  The nest boxes provide nesting habitat for cavity nesting species such as the Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow. Again this year, we are in need of volunteers to help clean, repair and/or replace the nest boxes before the nesting season begins. Volunteers meet at the Maple Island Road entrance to the Resource Recovery Center, 698 N. Maple Island Road, Muskegon, 49442. Volunteers will then be assigned to clean nest boxes along designated trails. Small tool kits are available to sign-out for the event but volunteers are welcome to bring their own supplies. Helpful supplies for nest box cleaning include screwdriver, pliers, scraper, small brush, hammer, screws and nails. First-time volunteers will receive further instruction on how to properly clean nest boxes the day of the event. The annual Nest Box Clean-out Day event is a great way to learn about cavity nest species, how to properly clean a nest box, how box style and placement affect the species using the box and a great way to do some birding on the Resource Recovery Center property.  The event is held rain or shine, so please dress appropriately and bring gloves. The event requires some walking outdoors on uneven ground. As a volunteer, your time is documented and included in the Resource Recovery Center’s certification application through the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC).  The WHC is a third-party organization that certifies companies who implement conservation measures on their property.  The Resource Recovery Center has received certification through the WHC since 2014 and has received two conservation awards. The support is appreciated!

Contact Anita Friend at 231-724-3457 for any nest box or predator guard donations.

Since we’re at the Wastewater, we usually see some good birds while we work.  You may even get to meet mice or Flying Squirrels up close and personal. And you get to help the bluebirds, swallows, chickadees, wrens and other birds that use the boxes.  This year you can meet the group, or head directly to clean your group of boxes. Send Steve an email at sdminard@gmail.com to get a group of boxes to clean.

Lunch is on your own this year. Following lunch, some participants may bird the nearby Muskegon State Game Area to look for early migrants. This can be an all day trip, or you can head out before or after lunch. For all the carpenters and builders out there, we always need more bluebird boxes. Boxes suffer damage over the years and new boxes are always needed. Send Steve an email at sdminard@gmail.com if you have new boxes to donate.

Michigan Natural Features Inventory and the Search for Rare Natural Communities

Jesse Lincoln - Michigan Natural Features Inventory

Jesse has spent 14 seasons as an ecologist at Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI). The work takes him all over the state to some of our most unique and intact natural places. It is a perspective not always available to most people and he enjoys sharing images and lessons learned from our wild places. MNFI is our State’s Natural Heritage program. What does that mean? Find out during the presentation when Jesse will show highlights from projects around the state and talk about important efforts which guide the conservation of Michigan’s native biodiversity.

Ecological Assessments and Conservation Practices in the Lower Grand River Watershed

Wendy Ogilvie - Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds

The Grand River is the longest river in Michigan, at 262 miles, flowing from its headwaters in Jackson County to its mouth at Grand Haven, where it enters Lake Michigan. The entire Grand River Watershed encompasses about 5,000 square miles. Due to its size, the management of the river is divided into 3 sections, Upper, Middle, and Lower. The Lower Grand River watershed covers nearly 3,000 square miles of land in all or parts of 9 counties in West Michigan. The Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) has a mission to understand, protect, and improve the natural resources of the Lower Grand River Watershed for all to enjoy. This presentation will provide a summary of some of the work that LGROW does to fulfill its mission and highlight the West Michigan Coastal Corridor project, which was initiated by Audubon Great Lakes 2021 report, Grand River Coastal Corridor.

Community Science in West Michigan

Travis Kurtz - Community Science Coordinator, John Ball Zoo

Throughout the presentation we will learn about the different community science projects that the John Ball Zoo is spearheading locally. Public participation within projects like these help protect and conserve our local biodiversity, and are extremely important for helping conservation scientists gather data to make fact-driven decisions within their management of our natural landscapes. One of the projects we will learn about, the City Nature Challenge, is a part of a worldwide bioblitz hosted by iNaturalist the last weekend of April. Join us as we learn about the importance of all of the projects that are lead by the John Ball Zoo in 2024, and discover how members of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club can become more involved with community science locally.

Winter Field Birding

Winter Field Birding

Led By: Steve Minard

This is planned a winter trip to search for winter birds such as Snowy Owl, Northern Shrike, and Snow Bunting.  These can be quite nomadic and hard to find, so we’ll try to cover lots of territory to look for them.  We’ll search fields in northern Ottawa County and Muskegon County northwest of Grand Rapids.  We’ll probably check some of the Crockery Creek bottom lands looking for Red-shouldered Hawk.  If conditions permit, we'll try to include the Muskegon Wastewater in our search.  Expect to spend most of the time in the car searching the fields for anything different.  Birders of all skills are welcome.

Essentials: Meet at the Boy Scout Headquarters west off Walker Road just north of I-96 at 8:00 AM.  We plan to bird until noon, you may want to bring a snack to hold you over until lunch.

Safety Hazards: Cold weather and slippery winter driving are the main hazards.  As with winter trips in particular, bad weather may cancel the trip.  Driving in a caravan can be hazardous.  Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop.  Please exercise caution on the roads at all times, and watch the car ahead of you when driving in a caravan.  Please have a passenger handle all radio or phone communications while in a car.

New Year's Day in Kent County

Led By: Steve Minard

Get your bird list for 2024 started in Kent County.  We'll try to track down some of the birds seen on the Christmas Count, and just look for whatever sounds good.  We will start at 6:00 am to look for owls in the Cannonsburg State Game Area and vicinity.  At dawn, we will shift to looking for winter passerines, waterfowl and hawks.  Birders of all skills are welcome to join us and start their bird list for 2024.

Essentials: Meet at the Ada McDonald’s on M21 at the Citgo Gas Station by 6:00 AM.  This is across M21 from Amway and near the Post Office.  We plan to be back at McDonald's at 8:00 am for a break and in case anyone wants to join us.  We plan to finish around 11:30 AM.  Dress for cold weather and bring a snack or warm beverage to keep you fueled up.

Safety Hazards: Cold weather and slippery winter driving are the main hazards.  As with winter trips in particular, bad weather may cancel the trip.  Driving in a caravan can be hazardous.  Get directions from the leader for travel to the next stop.  Please exercise caution on the roads at all times and watch the car ahead of you when driving in a caravan.  Please have a passenger handle all radio or phone communications while in a car.

2023 Christmas Bird Count

2023 Christmas Bird Count

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is a massive citizen science project with a rich history and deep impact. You can play a part--and you don't have to be an expert! Participate in the Grand Rapids Audubon Club's count on Saturday, Dec. 30, and end 2023 on an exciting, unexpected note!

The Grand Rapids Audubon Club Christmas Bird Count will be held this year on Saturday, December 30, 2023. Once again (after several years of no indoor meetings during Covid-19) the count will open with a meet and greet! The opening will be at the Wittenbach Wege Nature center at 11715 Vergennes Se., Lowell, MI 49331 at 7:30am, and wearing of masks is suggested indoors.

All area leaders are urged to be represented at the opening so all volunteers can be assigned and get needed forms or instructions. This return of the meet and greet is a great way for birding teams to get excited and pumped up for the day!

Compilation of bird data and lists will be delivered primarily by email to compiler Tom Leggett at tomleggett@hotmail.com. The nature center will be open all day for a break center if needed, but unfortunately, we can still not provide a hot lunch.

The following is a list of guidelines for the general information of the Christmas Bird Count counters: We urge wearing masks when in indoor gatherings; Carpooling should only occur within existing familiar or social “pod” groups; Allow for flexibility as it is not possible to know individual or family situations with respect to their home or family risks.

I hope to see many of you at the count, but the key priority this year is safety of you and others. This will be a great opportunity to spend time birding with friends and family.
